         This beautiful piece  of a moment  was shot by my friend Dr. Ajmal as we were on an outing near Rock Garden, Aseer National Park, in the southern province of Saudi Arabia.The poeple over here still rear flocks of sheep for a living. Before the petrolium based economic boom...it was their sole source of job, income and food.And they wont seem to be in favor of letting their tradition die......



     It is one of the oldest professions since the time of Adam and all the prophets,especially of Semitic religions, had been shepherds at least for a while in their life.

    How sad (and worrying) that this way of life is dying out and that there is hardly anyone wanting to perpetuate it. Modern people look down on lifestyles that are closely linked with nature but, in the words of Henry Thoreau: What's the use of a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on? In Thoreau's days there were no computers or other electronic devices. Today we can extend "house" to include all the gadgets we think we can't live without, and a host of other man-made things besides.

        There was a time when I lived in a sleepy, cold town all alone, having the luxury of a lovely friend, a small car, and a camera. We roamed around the places, exploring things no mortals we knew ever dared to. Mandi (مندي) is a special steak and rice dish, a staple at special occasions such as Eid, parties, and wedding feasts among Arabs. Originating in Hadhramouth, Yemen, it soon made inroads into the entire Arabian peninsula, Sub-Saharan Africa, and recently the Southeast Asian countries too, mostly on account of its oil-free and exotic style of cooking. In short, the fat from suspended meat drips onto the rice being cooked underneath. The meat gets exquisitely tender, which is probably why the name "mandi" (from nada ندى meaning 'dew' or 'snowflakes') was chosen.
